The Portland Timbers shipped out one of their former regulars with an eye on the future on Tuesday, dealing defender David Horst to the Houston Dynamo for a fourth-round pick (71st overall) in the MLS SuperDraft next month.

Horst, 28, appeared in 39 regular season matches of his three seasons in Portland, dating back to the team’s expansion season in 2011. He started a career-high 31games in 2012 before he suffered a broken right leg in March, and was shelved for much of the season.

He appeared in just two games last year for the Timbers. He got his start with Real Salt Lake in 2008.
