The David Ferreira era is over in Big D.
FC Dallas announced on Monday that that have declined to pick up the option on the 2010 MLS MVP's contract, meaning Ferreira will go into next month's Re-Entry process. Fellow midfielders Ramon Nuñez and Erick also saw their options declined. Nuñez will join Ferreira in the Re-Entry process, while Erick did not qualify for that acquisition mechanism.
Ferreira, 34, joined Dallas at the start of the 2009 season following a long and storied career spent primarily in his home country of Colombia. The attacking midfielder started all 30 games that season and ranked second on the team in goals scored (8) and third in assists (7).
The following year was his best. He was named MLS MVP after leading FCD to the 2010 MLS Cup with eight goals and 13 assists during the regular season. Ferreira added two goals and three assists during Dallas’ four-game playoff run that season, and ranks third in franchise history in regular-season assists (39), while sitting tied for seventh in goals scored (24) with Eddie Johnson and Dante Washington.
A broken ankle suffered early in 2011 sidelined Ferreira for much of that season, and limited his effectiveness ever since.
Nuñez, 28, rejoined FCD for the 2013 season after scoring 14 goals and nine assists in 67 appearances with the club from 2004-07. The Honduran spent time with Chivas USA, Olimpia, Puebla FC, Leeds United and Scunthorpe United before suffering a torn ACL in 2012 and returning to Dallas. After recovering from his injury, Nuñez went on to score one goal and three assists in 10 appearances.
Erick, 25, joined FC Dallas to fill a need in the defensive midfield on July 5, 2013. The Brazilian logged 652 minutes in nine appearances this season.
