NCAA: Defending champs Indiana downed in tournament's first round by Akron

Akron celebrate a goal in their NCAA tournament win over Indiana

Defending champions Indiana fell at the first hurdle in the 2013 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament, suffering a 3-2 defeat to perennial powerhouse Akron in Ohio on Thursday night.

Akron jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a pair of goals from Reinaldo Brenes that sandwiched a strike from Aodhan Quinn. But the Hoosiers fought back, first through Dylan Lax and then as Jacob Bushue put in the rebound after San Jose Earthquakes Academy product Tommy Thompson hit the cross bar. Akron were able to hold on, though, and the 2010 tournament champs will move on to ninth-seeded Marquette in the second round.
