GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Puebla couldn’t do Jose Torres’ Tigres UANL or Tijuana’s American horde a favor in the Liga MX playoff race on Friday evening, with La Franja falling 1-0 to a goal late in injury time at Estadio Morelos to Morelia.
US internationals DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco Fiscal both went the full 90 minutes in Puebla’s last game of the season before a lengthy break for the squad.
Puebla coach Rubén Omar Romano handed Beasley a rare start on the left wing, as opposed to at wing back. The former Chicago Fire player was busy in the final third and worked hard defensively, but wasn’t involved in any real goal-scoring opportunities.
Orozco Fiscal was on the right hand side of Puebla’s three central defenders and while he gave away a few too many free kicks, the Southern California native continued his good form.
Puebla were already eliminated from the playoff race before the game, but the loss doesn’t help Tigres or Tijuana, with Morelia now qualified.
Also Friday, Sonny Guadarrama played the full game for Nexaca in their 2-0 win over Alebrijes de Oaxaca in the final game of the regular season in Mexico’s second division. Nexaca have qualified and sit in second place in the Liga de Ascenso.
