American Exports: Sacha Kljestan scores again for Anderlecht; Brad Friedel saves Tottenham in PKs

AMSTERDAM – Anderlecht midfielder Sacha Kljestan continued his hot scoring form on Wednesday, bagging his sixth of the young season to cap a 3-0 Jupiler League victory at Oostende.

The US midfielder stands fifth on the Belgian league scoring chart after firing home in the aftermath of a broken short corner kick in the 73rd minute. The win, Anderlecht's second in succession away from home, lifted them back into fifth place.

Over in England, Brad Friedel made the winning penalty stop in round nine as Tottenham advanced to the Capital One Cup quarterfinals following a 2-2 draw with pesky visitors Hull City.

The veteran netminder made his lone stop of the game with a fine first-half denial of Ahmed El Mohamady. Early in the second half, Friedel was tagged for an unfortunate own-goal when a stray Curtis Davies attempt caromed in off him.

Spurs fell behind in extra time, but rallied on a goal by youngster Harry Kane. Friedel then stopped the first and last Hull penalty of the shootout, taken 8-7 by the hosts.

Tottenham will now welcome crosstown rivals West Ham United during the week of December 16 to battle for a place in the final four.

In Championship action, Oguchi Onyewu went unused as Queens Park Rangers played out a dreary 0-0 draw at Wigan. The result kept QPR winless in three, dropping them a spot to third place.

Across the North Sea in Denmark, Conor O'Brien and Odense BK bowed out of the DBU-Pokalen with a 4-3 collapse loss at FC Copenhagen. The American midfielder was among the culpable on the home side's first equalizer, as OB eventually blew two leads to fall out in the round of 16.

Finally, in the Netherlands, Aron Jóhannsson remained a spectator as AZ Alkmaar eased past second-division mites Achilles '29 by a 7-0 count to reach the last 16 of the KNVB Cup.
