Chris Wondolowski notched his 13th goal of the season in the San Jose Earthquakes' 2-1 win over FC Dallas in both club's season finale. Considering his strike rate in recent years, that was probably expected.
What came as a surprise was the revelation, reported in the San Jose Mercury News on Saturday night, after the match that he has played most of the season with a broken foot that will require surgery at some point.
The 30-year-old Wondo – who tied the all-time single-season scoring record with 27 goals last season – broke his foot ahead of the match against D.C. United on June 22, the club told MLSsoccer.com on Sunday.
He then re-aggravated it during training in the leadup to the California Clasico against the LA Galaxy on June 29 at Stanford Stadium. In order to play in that match and the subsequent CONCACAF Gold Cup, specialists fitted his cleat with a special orthodic.
Wondo also struck six times for the US national team in 2013. Making sure he is available for international duty could reportedly affect his decision of when to have surgery.
