American Exports: Will Packwood joins third-division Bristol Rovers on loan

Will Packwood

American defender Will Packwood is on the move.

The 20-year-old Birmingham City player was sent on a month-long loan to third-division Bristol City on Thursday. His stay will last through November 16 and will not include FA Cup matches.

"Will's an American boy, who is very highly thought of in Birmingham. So much so, they don't want to get him cup-tied," said Packwood's new manager at Rovers, John Ward.

Packwood signed a contract extension to remain at Birmingham during the summer but has yet to appear in a competitive match for the first team as he continues his recovery from a double leg fracture during a FA Cup match against Leeds United last January.

The club says Packwood has fully recovered from the injury, but needs more games, and Birmingham manager Lee Clark indicated in September that he was entertaining the possibility of a loan to help their academy product's return to fitness.

"I might consider a loan move for him to a League One or Two club to just accelerate his recovery," Clark told SkySports.com on September 13. "It would just be for our benefit, not sending him out on loan because he's surplus to requirements, far from it."
