Will the New York Red Bulls soon gain a sister club in the English Premier League?
That's according to a report on Saturday in The Mirror, which claims that Red Bull is interested in acquiring an English club to expand its footballing empire.
In addition to the MLS club, the Austrian energy-drink giant also owns teams in Brazil, Ghana, Germany and, of course, its flagship Red Bull Salzburg club near its corporate base. Red Bull's sporting empire also includes forays in motorsports and ice hockey, among others.
According to the report, the conglomerate is "on the lookout" for a suitable top-flight English club to purchase and revamp. It quotes an "insider" as saying, “Red Bull want a team to take into the Champions League. It is the only market they have not reached yet. Ideally this would be in the London area, but both Everton and Liverpool interest them, too, because it would not take much to get them to that level."
However, one prominent figure in Red Bull's sporting portfolio remains dubious a move is imminent in the immediate future.
"They have got their own team in Salzburg, they have another one in Germany, so I am not sure they would want to take another one on at the moment," said Christian Horner, the principal of Red Bull's Formula One team, in a Sunday interview with BBC Radio. "But with Red Bull, you never know."
The New York Red Bulls had no comment on the reports when contacted by MLSsoccer.com.
