The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced Friday that Toronto FC midfielder Jonathan Osorio has been suspended for two games following a Sept. 14 incident in the 77th minute against the New York Red Bulls in which his clearance attempt endangered the safety of an opponent.
Osorio’s clearance connected directly with the side of Red Bulls defender Kosuke Kimura’s head at close range. (See the video above.) No card was issued after the incident. Osorio will miss Toronto’s game Saturday against Sporting Kansas City and next week’s matchup with D.C. United.
Osorio apologized on Twitter for the kick: “I thank Kimura for understanding that I had no intention and for forgiving my apology. Truly a class act that I can learn from. For those who think otherwise, on the play I had NO intention whatsoever in hurting Kimura and I was very apologetic after the play.”
The committee also fined Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty for violating the hands to the face/head of an opponent policy in the dustup following the Osorio incident.
Also from that game, the committee fined Red Bulls defender Jámison Olave for violent conduct from a confrontation with Justin Braun in the 45th minute. The referee didn’t see the incident, but the committee determined it warranted a fine.
The committee also announced a one-game suspension for Montreal Impact sporting director Nick De Santis for “continued aggressive, confrontational and irresponsible behavior” toward officials following their 2-1 loss to the Columbus Crew on Sept. 14.
