9. Andrew Farrell
Pos: D | New England Revolution | Age: 21
Boasting strength, speed and impressive athleticism, Farrell has shown just why the New England Revolution traded up to select him No. 1 overall in this year’s SuperDraft. The versatile 21-year-old is among the most polished players in his draft class and that has helped make him an integral part of Jay Heaps' plans and a serious contender for the Rookie of the Year award. Farrell has been a constant in the Revs backline, starting in each of the 26 games he has played in this season, and his ability is sure to make him a staple of the club for years to come.

What TDs and coaches like: "Andrew's been really important to New England, starting at right back almost the whole year for them. ... He likes to get forward. He's got some great physical tools, but he's good on the ball as well. So he's a threat going forward and it really creates a numerical advantage for them because he does get forward so often and so quick. ... I think there’s the potential there if he keeps going. ... He could be maybe the next right back on the national team. Obviously he’s not ready for that, but there’s definitely potential for that. ... The first pick coming out. He deserved it. He’s been steady. ... I think the expectations, long term for him, he’s going to be a veteran and I think he’s going to keep getting better and better. He’s got a lot of athleticism."

Where TDs and coaches want improvement: "He just needs to pick and choose his times a little bit more wisely because there's been times when they've been caught out by him constantly going forward so much. ... I think as he gets older and adapts to the league more, it's a natural evolution for a player to start making a little better decisions. ... From a tactical, mental perspective he needs to be smarter. Sometimes he likes to dribble a lot out of the back. That’s stuff that will get knocked out in time. I think he’s going to be a good one. They got a really good player in him. ... I think he’s in a little bit of a learning curve. I think some of the stuff he got away with in college he’s learning he can’t do but I think he’s gonna be in the league a long time."

Opta Says: Andrew Farrell is third amongst players eligible for 24 Under 24 with 2.1 successful dribbles per game during 2013, the only defender in the top five.
