AMSTERDAM – Brek Shea returned to action for Stoke City on Wednesday night, working the first half of a 3-1 victory over Capital One Cup visitors Walsall.

Making his first Potters appearance since March, the US winger put in a solid performance. Stoke will next hit the road to tackle League One side Tranmere on either Spetember 24 or 25.

Elsewhere in the cup, two American netminders got the day off Wednesday. Brad Guzan watched on as Aston Villa cruised past Rotherham 3-0 and Tim Howard did the same for Everton's 2-1 extra time win over Stevanage. The Villans move on to host Tottenham in the third round, while the Toffees travel to Fulham for a place in the sweet 16.

In other third round ties involving Americans, Jozy Altidore and Sunderland are set to host Peterborough, Eric Lichaj's Nottingham Forest will visit Burnley, Sebastian Lletget's West Ham United drew Cardiff City, Jonathan Spector's Birmingham City will welcome Swansea City and Zak Whitbread's Leicester City are lined up against Derby County.
