Rumor Central: Didier Drogba wants to play in MLS – yes, it's this story again | THE SIDELINE

A new report from Goal.com claims that Galatasaray striker and Cote d'Ivoire star Didier Drogba is finally ready to play in MLS: “That's his goal and that's where he wants to finish [his career].”

Actually, better file this one under “friends talking out of turn.”

The report in question is actually based on a conversation with Salomon Kalou, Drogba's buddy, international teammate and former club colleague during their salad day at England's Chelsea FC.

“He loves America, he always goes there for holidays and it's a place he always enjoys,” Kalou told Goal.com with regards to Drogba. “For him to work there would be an amazing experience. I think that's his goal and that's where he wants to finish [his career].”

Experienced consumers of megastars-to-MLS gossip will not be surprised to hear that Drogba has two famous coastal destinations in mind for his move. But there's one small catch, and it's an important one.

“He hasn't told me directly,” admitted Kalou. “But he has told me that finishing in New York or LA would be amazing experience. I know that's in his mind right now. He would love to finish there.”

Unfortunately for fans eager to see the powerful Drogba – an icon in his native land who played a role in ceasing the civil war that nearly tore Cote d'Ivoire in two half a decade ago – try his hand in North America, most of Kalou's gossip is heavy on “woulds” and light on concrete evidence of his colleague making an imminent move from Turkey, where he relocated after his Chinese adventure fell apart.

Drogba has been eyed by MLS clubs before, with Commissioner Don Garber acknowledging that the league sought to sign him up as a Designated Player when he parted ways with Chelsea last year. But Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua swooped in to garner the Ivorian's signature with a huge pay package ranking among the highest in the world.

What do you think? Do Kalou's words have weight, or is this just more talk? And would you want to see your favorite team sign Drogba as a DP?
