GUADALAJARA, Mexico – American-born winger Diego Chavarri has moved to Iranian Pro League outfit Gostaresh Foolad, leaving Peruvian second division side Defensor San Alejandro.

The 24-year-old New Yorker played last weekend in Defensor’s 3-1 victory over Deportivo Municipal, but is now in Iran, where he will play on loan for one season, according to various reports out of Peru.

Chavarri burst onto the scene with Peruvian giant Sporting Cristal in 2011, but injuries hampered his progress and short spells at Cobresol and Sport Huancayo followed, before he dropped down to the second division with Defensor in early 2013.

Chavarri was born in New York and left the city for his parents’ native Peru when he was one month old. He has previously trained at USL Pro side Orlando City, but wasn’t offered a contract.
