Gold Cup: Record-tying 32 Major League Soccer players named to official rosters

Thirty-two players who play club ball in Major League Soccer were named to 2013 Gold Cup squads, according to the full roster list released by CONCACAF on Friday. That figure matches the record number set in 2011.

The US national team has the most MLS representation, as Clarence Goodson’s signing with San Jose on Friday brought Jurgen Klinsmann’s tally to 11 squad members. Canada follow closely with eight after the late addition of Goodson’s new club teammate, defender Nana Attakora. Costa Rica feature four MLSers, while Honduras have two.

Haiti (Sporting KC’s Peterson Joseph and Mechack Jerome) and Trinidad & Tobago (Philadelphia's Keon Daniel and Vancouver’s Carlyle Mitchell) each sport a pair of MLSers. Panama called FC Dallas striker Blas Pérez, while El Salvador included Chivas USA defender Steve Purdy and Martinique boast Portland striker Frédéric Piquionne.

Belize, Cuba and Mexico are the only teams without a single MLS representative.

Following the conclusion of the group stage, teams are allowed to make up to four replacements to their 23-man rosters, drawing reinforcements from the original 35-man provisional roster announced last month.

Gold Cup group-stage play kicks off on July 7 with Canada taking on Martinique at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The US open their tournament two days later vs. Belize in Portland. The final is set for July 28 in Chicago. The winning nation will face the 2015 Gold Cup winner in a one-game playoff for a berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.
