New York Red Bulls set to host Olympique Lyon in July friendly

Olympique Lyon will be making a stop to Red Bull Arena for the second straight summer, but this time they will play the club that calls the soccer-specific stadium home.


The New York Red Bulls announced on Friday afternoon that they will host UEFA Champions League participants Lyon in a friendly on July 16 that will mark the first-ever meeting between the two sides. Lyon had played at Red Bull Arena last year, but did so against Montpellier Herault SC in a 2012 Trophee des Champions match that Lyon won 4-2 on penalty kicks after the teams tied 2-2 in regulation.


The game will also give midfielder Juninho and forward Péguy Luyindula a chance to go up against their former club. Juninho played for Lyon from 2001-09 while Luyindula was there from 2002-04.
