Canadian Exports: Nik Ledgerwood's suspension for Hammarby opens door for international action

Nik Ledgerwood has proved that picking up a suspension for yellow-card accumulation doesn’t always have to be a bad thing.

Initially left off the roster for Canada’s friendly on Tuesday against Costa Rica due to club commitments, the Calgary native became available after picking up his third yellow card of the season in Hammarby’s 1-0 loss to GAIS last Thursday.

Ledgerwood (above) has now served his one-game suspension since Hammarby played on Monday, but a 1-0 loss to Jonkopings Sodra saw them slip to sixth place.

In Uruguay, Lucas Cavallini continues to impress even when his team fails to do so. He got his eighth goal of the Clausura campaign but it was the lone bright spot in an otherwise miserable day for Juventud de Las Piedras as they were thumped 5-1 by Peñarol. Juventud are in eighth place in the Primera División table with just one game to go this season.

With Canada always short of reliable scoring options up front, Cavallini has certainly been playing himself into the picture for inclusion in this summer’s Gold Cup.

In Finland, defender Roger Thompson hasn’t missed a minute of action for IFK Mariehamn in the Veikkausliiga. Thompson put in his usual 90 minutes on Sunday as Mariehamn tied Lahti 2-2. Through nine games this season, Mariehamn sit in seventh place with 12 points.

Frank Jonke is the other Canadian plying his trade in Finland’s top-flight, but his club, Jaro, didn’t include him in the squad on Sunday in their 1-1 draw with TPS. Jonke’s still scoreless in six appearances this season.

In Singapore, forward Jerome Baker picked up his sixth appearance of the S-League season last Friday when he came off the bench in the 69th minute for Hougang United in their 2-1 loss to Albirex Niigata S. Baker is still looking for his first goal of the season. Hougang have 17 points through 14 games, good enough for ninth place in the 12-team S-League.
