Luis Robles needed a weekend like the one he just had. Pretty badly, really.
The New York Red Bulls starting 'keeper for now – still just "for now" – saved a penalty by the Crew's Federico Higuain and came up with a handful more quality saves that catapulted him to the top of the Castrol Index Weekly Top 20. Robles, who was Man of the Match in his team's 1-0 road win in Columbus, has been the default No. 1 for New York this season. But with both youngster Ryan Meara and veteran Kevin Hartman approaching full fitness, head coach Mike Petke put Robles on notice that the job is soon to be up for grabs.
And Robles made it clear that he won't be surrendering his starting spot without a fight.
Seattle Sounders forward Eddie Johnson claimed the No. 2 spot thanks to a solid all-around 90 minutes against Philly, which included his second goal of the year. It came off a corner swung in by Mauro Rosales, who also cracked the top 20 with a 15th-place showing.
Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth claimed his now customary place in the top five, finishing No. 3 thanks to a strong showing in New England's scoreless draw at Portland, while veteran 'keeper Nick Rimando of Real Salt Lake picked up an assist in his team's 2-0 home win over Vancouver, and helped himself to the No. 4 spot.
Montreal Impact winger Justin Mapp rounded out a phenomenal week with a pair of goals in San Jose and the No. 5 ranking in the top 20.
