Canadian Exports: Iain Hume's club-over-country choice pays off in promotion fight

Iain Hume with Canada

It turns out that choosing club over country – this time, anyway – was the right call for Iain Hume.

Hume confirmed to MLSsoccer.com a few weeks ago that he had been called into Canadian national team camp, but chose to stay with club side Doncaster Rovers since England’s League One doesn’t stop for international breaks. Add in the fact that he needed to continue working through an injury – not to mention the club’s promotion fight – and the decision kind of made itself.

The decision paid off when Hume scored Doncaster’s second goal this past Saturday as they held on to beat Scunthorpe United 2-1. Already on top of League One, Doncaster now have some daylight ahead of the pack with 72 points after 39 games. They’re five points up on three chasing teams.

Forward Lucas Cavallini wasn’t called into the Canadian camp and thus he was involved for Juventud de las Piedras in Uruguayan Clausura action over the weekend.

Cavallini came on for the second half in Juventud’s 1-0 loss to Defensor Sporting. Juventud have lost two games in a row.

The new season in Singapore is underway and Sherif El-Masri’s club, Young Lions, aren’t off to a particularly good start. Five games into the new season, Young Lions are still looking for their first point. El-Masri played the full game on Wednesday in a 1-0 loss to league-leaders Albirex Niigata S.

It’s been a better start for midfielder Jordan Webb, who made the move from Hougang United to Home United during the offseason. He scored his second goal in five games last Saturday. Webb’s goals have come in back-to-back games, both of which were wins for his club. Saturday’s tally was his team’s third in their 3-1 win over Geylang International.

Webb’s old club has kept up its Canadian quotient as 21-year old forward Jerome Baker joined his first professional side for this season. The Toronto native made his second appearance on Friday in their 3-2 loss to Tanjong Pagar. Baker played 75 minutes.
