Mexico vs. USA by the numbers: USMNT seeking first qualifying win in Mexico

Orozco Fiscal and Terrence Boyd celebrate vs Mexico

MEXICO CITY – A 75-year rivalry will write its latest chapter on Tuesday night when the US national team faces Mexico in a 2014 World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Azteca (10:30 pm ET, ESPN and Univision, Live chat on MLSsoccer.com).

Here's your history lesson on the matchup:

Sweet 16: The US have a 16-32-12 all-time record against Mexico in 60 matches. Only one of those wins came on the road.

Maiden victory: The first-ever win by the US in Mexico came in Aug. 15, 2012, when a late Michael Orozco Fiscal goal gave the Americans a historic victory in an international friendly. It was the first friendly on Mexican soil for the US since October 1984.

Slim Pickings: The US only have one victory and one World Cup qualifying draw (Nov. 2, 1997) to speak of in 25 all-time matches played in Mexico, who've recorded a 23-1-1 at home vs. their border rivals.

World Cup qualifying in Mexico: Since 1972, the USMNT has played seven World Cup qualifiers on Mexican soil and has lost all of them apart from the scoreless draw in November 1997. Here's the rundown:

1974 WC qualifier: 3-1 loss on Sept. 3, 1972 in Mexico City
1978 WC qualifier: 3-0 loss on Oct. 15, 1976 in Puebla
1982 WC qualifier: 5-1 loss on Nov. 9, 1980 in Mexico City
1998 WC qualifier: 0-0 tie on Nov. 2, 1997 in Mexico City
2002 WC qualifier: 1-0 loss on July 1, 2001 in Mexico City
2006 WC qualifier: 2-1 loss on March 27, 2005 in Mexico City
2010 WC qualifier: 2-1 loss on Aug. 12, 2009 in Mexico City

Azteca Mythology: Since 1972, the US has played 10 times at the Estadio Azteca for a combined record of 1-8-1 with only the August 2012 triumph and the November 1997 draw to speak of.

What Have You Done for Me Lately: Since 2000, the USA have posted a 11-5-3 record against Mexico in all matches, home and away.

Gold-en Touch: Mexico do have bragging rights when it comes to the Gold Cup, defeating the USA in four of five Gold Cup finals (1993, 1998, 2009, 2011). The USA have the 2007 title match under their belt.

Bragging Rights: The USA will always have that 2-0 victory in the Round of 16 at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea. The goals by Brian McBride and Landon Donovan ousted a bitter Mexican side, and the bad blood from that match is still palpable today.
