The Chicago Fire bolstered their goalkeeping corps on Tuesday morning, announcing the signing of former Charleston Battery netminder Alex Kann.
The 6-foot-4, 22-year-old from Decatur, Ga., is a product of Furman University who trialed with the Fire last season, but did not earn a roster spot and moved on to Charleston for the 2012 USL PRO campaign, where he served as an understudy to former Chicago and D.C. United 'keeper Andrew Dykstra.
He rejoined Chicago for the 2013 preseason and is now expected to occupy the third spot on the Fire depth chart behind Sean Johnson and Paolo Tornaghi.

“We’re pleased to add Alec to our roster,” Fire president of soccer operations Javier Leon said in a press release. “We had the opportunity to observe Alec’s game for the past two seasons and he is a solid addition to our goalkeeping corps.”
Kann earned NSCAA All-South Region honors, All-Southern Conference honors and NSCAA Scholar All-America accolades in his final year at Furman, leading the Paladins to a 14-4-4 record and a spot in the NCAA tournament. He wrapped up his college career with a 37-16-10 record.
