Former Toronto FC and FC Dallas midfielder Julian de Guzman has ended all speculation about his professional future by signing a deal with SSV Jahn Regensburg of the German 2.Bundesliga through the end of June.
Regensburg confirmed the signing on their website on Thursday, saying that de Guzman could be available to suit up for the team as early as their next game, Sunday against Hertha Berlin.
“He’s a tackling midfielder and has plenty of international experience,” club CEO Franz Gerber told the site. “It will definitely help us in the fight for the league.”
He joins a team that’s on the bottom of the league with just 13 points through 19 games this season.
De Guzman, 31, had been a free agent since going undrafted in both rounds of the 2012 MLS Re-Entry Draft and had been training with Mallorca in Spain. He had previously played in Germany with FC Saarbrucken and Hannover 96 of the Bundesliga. He's also a regular with the Canadian national team, with 61 caps for the Canucks since his international debut in 2002.
