Fire choose Santos with lone pick of Re-Entry Stage 1

Maicon Santos and Carlos Valdes

Stage One of the 2012 MLS Re-Entry Draft came and went with only one player – Maicon Dos Santos – finding a new home as 18 teams passed with an eye toward the Stage Two draft next Friday.

While their colleagues uttered "pass" in quick succession, the Chicago Fire chose Santos (above left) with the 11th pick. Santos, whose option was declined by D.C. United, enjoyed a career year with the capital city outfit, scoring seven goals and dishing out three assists in 16 starts (26 appearances). He arrived in MLS in 2009 with Chivas USA, before enjoying stints with Toronto FC, FC Dallas and D.C. He has 21 career MLS goals in 88 appearances.

The Brazilian will join a strike corps that includes midseason signing Sherjill MacDonald, Dominic Oduro, Patrick Nyarko, Chris Rolfe and youngster Kellen Gulley.
