Canadian Exports: McKenna cools off, but Koln stay hot

It had to end sometime for Kevin McKenna.


The big, 32-year-old center back scored for the third consecutive game in FC Köln’s 1-1 draw with Hertha Berlin last Thursday. But McKenna, who spent some time as a target man for Canada earlier in his career, couldn’t make it four-for-four as he failed to score on Sunday.


Even without his recent golden touch, Köln were able to win 1-0 over Ingolstadt with McKenna playing the full 90 in helping his team pick up the clean sheet. After a slow start to the season, Köln are unbeaten in five games and up to seventh in the 2.Bundesliga.

Up one flight, the struggles continued in the Bundesliga for Augsburg and Marcel de Jong. He came on in the 52nd minute on Saturday as Augsburg picked up their fifth draw of the season with a 1-1 result against Freiburg.


With just one win through 15, it’s looking more and more likely that Augsburg will be heading back down to the 2.Bundesliga at season’s end.


For Atiba Hutchinson and PSV Eindhoven, back-to-back losses have dropped them out of top spot in the Eredivisie in the Netherlands. Hutchinson played all 90 minutes this past Saturday as PSV were beaten 3-1 by Ajax. They are now down to third but just a point back of the two teams tied for first.


In Turkey, goalkeeper Milan Borjan lost for the first time in four league games for Sivasspor as they were beaten 2-0 on the road by Istanbul BB. Sivasspor dropped down to ninth place on 19 points in 14 games, but are still just seven points back of first place in a very close Super Lig.


In Portugal’s second division, Pedro Pacheco started and put in 62 minutes of work for Santa Clara as they beat last-placed Freamunde 1-0. With the win, Santa Clara are into fifth, seven points back of a promotion spot.

In Uruguay, Lucas Cavallini played 74 minutes for Juventud as they lost 2-0 to Peñarol. Juventud currently sit in ninth place in the 16-team Primera División with 19 points from 14 games.


In Cyprus, Issey Nakajima-Farran helped AEK Larnaca forget about last weekend’s loss, coming on in the 19th minute to help his side to a 2-1 win over Enosis. It’s a tight race atop the Cypriot 1. Division table as Larnaca are third place on 28 points and just four back of first.


In Slovenia, Stefan Cebara – a former Canadian Under-20 national teamer – started and went 69 minutes for Celje in their 1-1 draw with Rudar. For Cebara, it was his 10th appearance of the season. Celje who are unbeaten in three games in all competitions, and are fifth place in the 10-team 1. SNL table.
