International Roundup: Cahill goal drives Socceroos

Tim Cahill - Australia

The big MLS fireworks on the day were provided by Honduras, who handed Canada an 8-1 thrashing in advancing to the Hexagonal. New England's Jerry Bengtson and Seattle's Mario Martínez combined for five goals and four assists in the rout, while former Houston Dynamo forward Carlo Costly had a hat trick and an assist of his own.

Not to be outdone, Costa Rica hung a touchdown on 10-man Guyana, winning 7-0. RSL's Álvaro Saborío had a pair of goals and a missed PK in that one.

The US, meanwhile, advanced to the Hexagonal with a 3-1 win over Guatemala.

The final six Hexagonal teams are the US and Jamaica out of Group 1; Costa Rica and Mexico out of Group 2; and Honduras and Panama out of Group 3. Qualifying will resume in February.

On the other side of the world, New York's Tim Cahill led Australia into Iraq and came out with a goal and a much-needed 2-1 win, their first of the round. It bumped them up to second in the AFC's Group B halfway through the qualifying process.

Also getting on the scoreboard was Toronto FC's Darren O'Dea, who had the capper in a business-like 4-1 Ireland win over the Faroe Islands.
