NEW YORK — A headbutt by Montreal's Nelson Rivas may have cost Philadelphia's Antoine Hoppenot a broken nose, but it also resulted in a multi-game suspension and fine for the Colombian defender.
The MLS Disciplinary Committee on Thursday suspended Rivas two games on top of the automatic one-game suspension following the red card he received in the 68th minute of the Aug. 4 match between the Montreal Impact and Philadelphia Union (watch the play on the right). Rivas was also fined an undisclosed amount.

The veteran defender will miss the Aug. 12 match in New England and two home games on Aug. 18 and Aug. 25 against San Jose and D.C. United.
In addition to the Rivas sanction, the Disciplinary Committee also announced that MLS leading scorer Chris Wondolowski was fined for "public criticism of the officials" after San Jose's match against the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 22. As is customary, the fine total was not revealed.
A 62nd-minute penalty kick decided the match in favor of the Whitecaps (watch the play below) and Wondolowski was quoted as saying after the match: "It's just a bummer that an assistant referee wants to have a whistle in his mouth and isn't good enough to do that."
