AMSTERDAM – Despite interest from the likes of the New England Revolution and Vancouver Whitecaps, a source close to the situation involving Rangers defender Carlos Bocanegra confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that the US captain will remain in Europe a little while longer.
The 33-year-old former Chicago Fire man recently stated that he was open to an MLS return, but that notion has been put on the back-burner with clubs in three European countries still competing for his services.
MLSsoccer.com has learned that at least one of the interested parties plays in France, where the American has played for both Rennes and Saint-Étienne.
Bocanegra is available on a free transfer after the dissolution of Rangers FC due to debt and tax penalties. The replacement entity of the same name will play in Scotland's fourth flight next season, a relegation that will see Bocanegra, Alejandro Bedoya and Maurice Edu all leave the Light Blues this summer.
Edu has been linked to a number of teams in Turkey, while Bedoya has been linked with Swedish side Helsingborg IF.
Last season, Bocanegra played 29 contests for the SPL runners-up and another five in cup competition, scoring three goals in total. He’s expected to be called into US national camp in the coming weeks ahead of the team’s friendly matchup against Mexico in Mexico City on Aug. 15.
