The rampaging San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas meet for the second time in less than two weeks when the clubs face off Wednesday at Buck Shaw Stadium before an NBC Sports Network audience. The Quakes lead the Western Conference and MLS overall table, after their 5-0 thrashing of second-place Real Salt Lake last weekend. FC Dallas put an end to their club-record 13-game winless run last weekend, coming back for a 2-1 win at Colorado.

• Both teams had shots cleared off the line in the first half. Fabian Castillo nearly found the net in the 31st minute for FCD when he connected with a loose ball, but it hit fallen San Jose defender Jason Hernandez in front of goal and bounced away from danger.
• The Earthquakes nearly broke through five minutes later. Chris Wondolowski was freed in on goal and chipped past an on-rushing Kevin Hartman in goal, but Hernan Pertúz recovered to clear the ball off the line.
• Hartman finished the night with one save for FC Dallas, while Quakes 'keeper Jon Busch was credited with three saves.

The San Jose Earthquakes won a top-of-the-table meeting with Real Salt Lake in impressive fashion, rolling to a 5-0 victory Saturday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes lead the Western Conference with 40 points from 20 games.

• Wondolowski opened the scoring in the 18th minute. A corner kick was nodded down by Alan Gordon and skipped across the face of goal, where Wondolowski snuck in to polish off Justin Morrow’s back-post pass with a diving header.
• The Quakes doubled their margin in the 63rd minute when Gordon added a tap-in from Victor Bernardez’s post-rattling header.
• In the 72nd minute, Wondolowski tallied again by converting with a near-post touch after Shea Salinas broke in down the right wing drove in a low cross.
• Simon Dawkins cashed in from short range off a 79th-minute corner kick to make the score 4-0, and Wondolowski completed his hat trick a minute later after Khari Stephenson unlocked RSL’s defense with a simple through pass.
• Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop made one change to the team that played to a scoreless draw with FC Dallas in Frisco. Shea Salinas came into the midfield for the suspended Ramiro Corrales.

• With the victory, the Earthquakes now lead MLS with 12 wins and 40 points, surpassing their 2011 season point total.
• “I felt it was a strong performance from the guys,” said San Jose head coach Frank Yallop. “I felt good coming into the game. There was just a sense of confidence in the team and in the locker room before the game and it carried out to the pitch. There was no doubt in my mind that we were going to win the game.”
• The Quakes have scored five goals on two separate occasions this season, also hitting for five in a 5-3 win May 2 vs. D.C. United. San Jose lead MLS with 41 goals scored through the first 19 weeks this season.
• Chris Wondolowski scored his third career hat trick in the win. He now has 17 goals this season – one more than he scored last year, when he tied for the league goalscoring lead.
• “He has played really well up top all season. He’s been in really good form and you saw that again tonight,” said Yallop. “He missed an opportunity in the first half, but was able to stay focused and buried two goals for his 17th and 18th of the season. All in all, it was a very good performance for him and I think it will help him through the remainder of the season.”
• Wondolowski has been credited with eight game-winning goals this season, one shy of the MLS record for a single season, which he set in 2010, along with former LA Galaxy striker Carlos Ruiz (2002).
• “If you look at the tape of this match, you will see that all I had to do was finish and that is a credit to my teammates,” Wondolowski said. “All year long they have put me, Alan [Gordon] and Steven [Lenhart] in prime positions to score. Hopefully we can carry some of the offensive momentum into our next match on this short week.”
• Shea Salinas made his second start in the last three games, his first two since he was sidelined in mid-April, and he recorded a pair of assists, his third career two-assist game.
• “Our midfielders had a great game tonight," added Wondolowski. "Sam Cronin, [Rafael] Baca, Marvin Chavez and Shea [Salinas] played world-class stuff tonight. They made it easy for me. They found the space and did a good job of putting me in a position where all I had to do was finish."
• It was a second consecutive defensive shutout for the Quakes – after going 14 games, since March 31, without one.
• “We are starting to hit our stride. We had to rotate our back line due to injuries, but now that we are healthy, we are finding some cohesiveness and it’s starting to show,” said center back Jason Hernandez. “I liked our performance in Dallas and I liked this one even better.”
FC DALLAS
FC Dallas put an end to their 13-game winless streak, coming back for a 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. FCD is in a tie for ninth place in the Western Conference with 19 points from 20 matches.

• The Rapids took the lead five minutes into the second half. Conor Casey found an unmarked Omar Cummings in all kinds of space down the right side, and he fired home on an angle, beating Kevin Hartman to the near post.
• But FCD leveled the score at 1-1 just 10 minutes later. Cleaning up a cleared corner, Fabian Castillo’s speed created room for his cross into the box, which found substitute Carlos Rodriguez at the back post.
• The winner came nine minutes from the end. A perfect ball from David Ferreira found Rodriguez on the right flank, but his cut-back was headed off the line by a retreating Drew Moor. But Castillo was there to smash home the rebound.
• FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman made three changes to the team that reached a scoreless result with the San Jose Earthquakes in Frisco. Jair Benitez came into the back four for Carlos Rodriguez, and Ricardo Villar and Daniel Hernandez came into the midfield for James Marcelin and the traded Andrew Wiedeman.

• FC Dallas put an end to their 13-game winless streak, and notched their first victory since April 14. It was tied for the fourth-longest winless run in MLS history.
• “We try to really keep the pressure off these guys. We’ve been going without six or seven starters. The result is the result,” said FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman. “The thing I’ve said to these guys is we’ve fought in every game. In every game we fight and we just don’t find the way to get the win, or we beat ourselves or we get fatigued.”
• It was also FCD’s first road victory since last Oct. 12, a nine-game streak without an away win.
• “It has been disappointing to put together a winless streak as long as it was," said goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. "It’s always great to enjoy and celebrate victories and there hasn’t been a lot of rewarding ourselves lately, so to have gotten a win in a very difficult environment tonight, it means a lot to us. Hopefully it will give us some confidence going into San Jose, and maybe we can put together a stretch of wins that will put us back in the hunt.”

• Fabian Castillo recorded a goal and an assist for the second time in his MLS career, the first since last May 14 when he did it vs. Philadelphia.
• “I thought [Castillo] was really very much engaged throughout the game and I think a big part of that might have been external,” Hyndman said. “When we brought him into the team, he stayed with [Rapids head coach] Oscar [Pareja] for three or four weeks. So he has that relationship with Oscar and I think he wanted to do well to show Oscar it was a good decision to bring him here.”
• Castillo started the game as the lone striker, with Brek Shea back to his wide midfield role. But the two changed after the opening quarter hour.
• “We were really back on our heels. The thing that changed was moving Brek into a striker position and moving Fabian onto the flank,” said Hyndman. “Brek was really unable to keep the balls over there with Hunter [Freeman] and he became a handful for the two center backs. That started opening it up for us. We were doing a little bit better, being a little bit more dangerous and Castillo did a good job tracking back and working.”
• While he did not record an assist, David Ferreira played an integral part in the winning goal that snapped FCD’s 13-game winless run in their 2-1 win at Colorado. It was his second start after returning from a broken leg that sidelines him for 15 months.
• “Right now you see David Ferreira coming back. This is his third game in a row. He’s the one that’s making the passes. He’s the one that’s getting others to work harder,” said Hyndman.
• Ricardo Villar also made his first start since the fifth game of the season, April 5 vs. New England. He had come off the bench the week before against San Jose.
• “It doesn’t seem like we’ve gotten very many breaks in terms of injuries. Someone will get healthy, and then someone will go down. We’ve got a few guys with concussion symptoms,” said Hartman. “It comes down to we fight and we work, and we try our best to get victories and points. Unfortunately when you’re missing the amount of talent that we are missing from injuries, it becomes more difficult to compete. Some guys have stepped in and done admirably.Ā"
