AMSTERDAM — LA Galaxy forward Chad Barrett began a brief audition with Norwegian club Vålerenga on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old, who has a goal and three assists in 18 appearances with the MLS Cup holders this season, will train with the five-time Tippeligaen champs for the remainder of the week. Barrett will miss Wednesday's game at Vancouver and Saturday's Superclasico againt Chivas USA.
"He will be with us this week, and then go back to the United States on the weekend," Vålerenga press officer Lasse André Vangstein told MLSsoccer.com.
The club, currently in sixth place despite its offense ranking in the bottom half of the league, is eager to enhance its strike capabilities heading into the season's second half.
"We are always looking for players at any position, but we have a striker on loan that is going back July 1," said Vangstein, referring to Marcus Pedersen of Dutch side Vitesse. "We will be one striker short, plus we have just changed our formation from having one striker to two."
The next game up for Vålerenga — who formerly employed Portland Timbers goalkeeper Troy Perkins — is a Sunday visit to face Ricardo Clark and Sean Cunningham's Stabæk.
Having also suited up for the Chicago Fire and Toronto FC, Barrett has scored 42 goals in 192 career MLS contests. The San Diego native won the 2006 US Open Cup crown with Chicago before celebrating an MLS Cup victory with LA last season.
