BBVA Compass Stadium opener exceeds expectations

HOUSTON — Many times when you look forward to something for a while it does not quite live up to expectations.

The Houston Dynamo players and fans have been looking forward to the opening of BBVA Compass Stadium for nearly six years. That includes 15-plus months of construction.

But on Saturday, everything went as planned as the Houston Dynamo delivered a 1-0 win over D.C. United to usher in a stadium they can truly call their home.

“I didn’t sleep so well the last couple of nights and it had nothing to do with the storm,” said head coach Dominic Kinnear after the 1-0 victory. “We’ve been waiting for this for such a long time. I didn’t have any expectations. All mine were wants today. You want to win. … It was just all wants and what I wanted today was, thankfully, granted.”

The play on the field and a big goal from Brad Davis set the scene, but the fans took a star turn. The sold-out crowd was loud throughout the match and accentuated big moments with applause. When the goal came, the noise that arose proved memorable.

“I knew the crowd was going to be good having the game played the other night,” Kinnear said. “I was kind of waiting for the sound of the crowd and the roar after a goal. I do remember that and I don’t remember that very often. I do remember when Brad scored and just hearing the crowd was wonderful.”

With things falling into place everyone on the Dynamo side was treated to a pay off that did in fact live up to the hype.

“It was a great feeling and a great day for our fans, team and organization,” said Davis who notched the game-winner. “Very happy and very proud of the guys and looking forward to more wins here.”
