Sueno 2102 - Chivas Day 2

Sueño MLS 2012 – presented by Allstate descends on LA

BELL GARDENS, Calif. — A week after the Seattle Sounders chose their representatives for the final stages on Sueño MLS 2012 - presented by Allstate, more than 1,000 young aspiring soccer players had their chance to showcase their respective talents for Chivas USA’s youth development staff at the Bell Gardens Sports Complex.

Within minutes, the Rojiblancos coaching staff were pointing out a young local forward whose craftiness in front of goal stood out from the rest.

Armando Flores, 17, had come from Santa Ana for the trials, after hearing about Sueño MLS on Univision’s Republica Deportiva. He rose to the occasion, tallying a couple of goals early, and soon experienced a little taste of a professional soccer player’s everyday life: television interviews.

“There are a lot of great players here today,” Flores told “They all seem to have something special about them. I have to admit I was very, very nervous but I’m not here to think of how good the other players are, what’s most important to me is that I gave it my all and I feel that today, I did that.”

The Los Angeles trials differed from the other ones by the many families in attendance to root for their sons. They represented a great opportunity to Chivas USA General Manager Jose Domene, who was excited to once again participate in what he calls “an event that is fundamental to the growth of U.S soccer.”

“This is the future of not only MLS but of US Soccer,” he said. “Unfortunately not everyone can make it. But the ones that do at least make it to the final list of 30, should realize that they have the potential and in the end have accomplished something important in their race to become a professional soccer player.”

For a model, all the young players had to do was look at one of Chivas USA’s very own: Jorge Villafana. The midfielder was the winner of Sueño MLS’s first edition, and on this day, he showed up and shared his experience and thoughts with the young players. He even passed out tickets for Chivas USA’s next home game versus Chicago Fire.

“Sueño MLS continues to give young aspiring soccer players a chance,” Villafana said. “Aside from being grateful for the opportunity that I once got, I think it’s great that this event keeps growing and giving our country’s talent a chance to pursue a career it professional soccer. These types of opportunities don’t come around very often, so my advice is, if you have the talent, give it your all and in the end, it’ll pay off. Like it did for me.”
