Toronto FC's Frei undergoes successful ankle surgery

Stefan Frei

Stefan Frei now begins a long road to recovery after having successful surgery on his injured left leg, Toronto FC announced on Wednesday.

SAVE: Frei comes up big twice

The Swiss shot-stopper went under the knife on Tuesday to repair ligament damange in his left ankle, but Frei now faces up to 10 weeks out of action for the Reds.

Frei suffered the injury — which also included a broken left fibula — in a training mishap on March 24, and has forced Milos Kocic into the fulltime netminder's role.

Kocic and TFC take on Santos Laguna in Torreón, Mexico, on Wednesday in the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions League semifinal series (8 pm ET, Fox Soccer, LIVE CHAT on MLSsoccer.com).
