American Exports: Gerzicich wins Israeli league crown

Bryan Gerzicich

AMSTERDAM – It was championship Monday for one American export across the pond, with Bryan Gerzicich helping Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona wrap up their first Ligat Ha'Al title with a 0-0 draw against visiting Hapoel Tel Aviv.

The result gives the new Israeli kings an insurmountable 16-point lead over their second place guests with just five games remaining in the championship playoff round. Gerzicich (above) went his usual 90 minutes in defensive midfield, getting away scot-free with his lone error of the night when Israel winger Alroey Cohen fired a prime chance wide near the hour.

Over in Denmark, Conor O'Brien worked 86 solid minutes in the unusual station of holding midfield as SønderjyskE scored a 3-1 victory at AGF Aarhus. Posting consecutive Superliga wins for the first time since last May gave the South Jutland side nine points of breathing room above the relegation zone.
