American Exports: Onyewu sidelined by knee injury

Oguchi Onyewu scored twice for Sporting vs. Beira Mar

AMSTERDAM — Sporting CP defender Oguchi Onyewu is set for two months on the shelf after a Tuesday right knee exam showed MCL and meniscus damage suffered in weekend action.

The US back-liner saw his patrol cut short during Sunday's 1-0 win over Paços de Ferreira. Onyewu required medical assistance following a 23rd-minute collision and was subbed out a few moments later.

Sporting, currently fourth in Liga ZON Sagres and bidding for a place in the Europa League sweet 16, announced that they expect to have the American back in action before the end of April.

The injury rules out Onyewu for next week's US national team friendly against Italy in Genoa, but he should be ready by the time they tune up for 2014 World Cup qualifying with late May tilts against Scotland and Brazil.
