American Exports: Spector, Brums inch toward promotion

Birmingham City's Johnathan Spector unload a cross as Portsmouth's Jason Pearce slides in

AMSTERDAM — Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City continued their Premier League push on Tuesday, climbing to within two points of the promotion elevator with a leave-it-late 1-0 victory over Championship guests Portsmouth.

The US international helped the St. Andrews crew rise two spots to third, contributing two shot blocks and one cross that drew a Pompey save. Still the last side unbeaten at home in the Championship this season, Birmingham also extended their run across all competitions to 13 games without defeat.

The Brums have now allowed just one goal in Spector's last seven starts, with shutouts posted in eight of the last 11. They have not leaked multiple goals with him on the field since November, a span of 18 matches.
