Gringo Report: Beasley's early goal lifts Puebla

DaMarcus Beasley

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — DaMarcus Beasley lifted the gloom at Puebla with a fourth-minute strike that gave La Franja their first win of the season against Jaguares on Saturday.

Beasley swiftly shifted the ball from his left to right foot and blasted a shot into the corner of the goal to net his third goal for the club and a 1-0 win over Chiapas.

On Sunday, Joe Corona came off the bench for Club Tijuana in the 30th minute and won a penalty early in the second half when he was pushed in the back from a corner. The penalty wasn't enough for the Xolos, however, as they fell 3-1 to Santos Laguna.

Edgar Castillo was sharp on the left for Tijuana, and Herculez Gomez was named on the bench for Santos but didn't get on the field.

José Francisco Torres' Pachuca, meanwhile, kept up their unbeaten start to the season in a 1-1 draw with Querétaro despite playing 35 minutes down a man. “El Gringo” went the full 90 for the fourth consecutive game.

Similarly, Michael Orozco Fiscal completed the full game at center back for San Luis, who were defeated 3-1 by Club América on Saturday.

Also Saturday, Jonathan Bornstein was an unused sub for Tigres UANL in their 2-1 win over Estudiantes Tecos, as was Sonny Guadarrama in Atlante's 2-2 tie against Cruz Azul.

Sacramento, Calif.-born Miguel Ángel Ponce completed the full game for Chivas in their 0-0 tie against Pumas UNAM.

In Mexico's second division, Jesús Padilla went 69 minutes for La Piedad in their 2-1 loss against Celaya while Isaac Acuña played the final 20 minutes for Club Mérida in their 2-1 victory against Lobos BUAP.
