Porter names 22-man roster for Under-23 camp at HDC

Caleb Porter is getting the band back together.

The US Under-23 men's national team coach on Friday named a 22-man squad to participate in training camp at the Home Depot Center ahead of CONCACAF's Olympic qualifying tournament, and the roster includes 18 players who were part of Porter's camp last month in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

The roster includes 11 MLS players, three college players who will likely be picked in next week's MLS SuperDraft and a few new additions, especially at the forward position: Josh Gatt, Tony Taylor and Isaac Acuña are among the new faces.

Porter's camp will consist of 11 days of training in Carson, Calif., from Jan. 8-18 before the U-23s travel to Costa Rica to play against two local club teams.

"I'm very pleased with where we are at in our process," Porter said in a statement. "With three training camps remaining, I know the staff and players are hungry to get back to work after the holidays. We feel like we have a good handle on the pool after two camps, and certainly the group will become clearer when we get closer to qualifying."

The January camp marks the third gathering of this group, as the team prepares for the March 22-26 Olympic qualifiers against Canada, El Salvador and Cuba at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn.

"We are really looking to build as much continuity as possible and this will be reflected in our roster selections from this point forward," Porter said.

The U-23 side will be implementing the same framework set forward by US senior national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. The U-23s' time at the HDC coincides with the senior team's training camp there, and the sides will square off against each other twice in scrimmages on Jan. 13 and 17.

Porter said he will continue to experiment, mixing the new faces with old hands like Freddy Adu, Dilly Duka and Mix Diskerud.

"Nothing is completely set yet, and you will see several more players sprinkled in until we make our final decisions," Porter said. "Things are taking shape quickly, which is very promising, and I'm eager to continue building on the great progress we made from the last camp."

The second leg of the training camp in San José, Costa Rica, includes a pair of scrimmages as the U-23s face Saprissa reserves on Saturday, Jan. 21, and Alajueluense on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
