International Roundup: How MLSers fared on FIFA date

They’ll be celebrating in the streets of Dublin.

It was only a 1-1 draw for the Republic of Ireland at home against Estonia, but that was more than enough to see the Irish through to just their second European Championship. LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane captained the Boys in Green, going 67 minutes before coming off for Simon Cox.

New York midfielder Joel Lindpere went 54 minutes in the center of the pitch for the Blueshirts, who came up short in their quest to make their first-ever major tournament.

In CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, Vancouver defender Carlyle Mitchell went 90 for already-eliminated Trinidad and Tobago in their 2-0 win over Guyana. Columbus Crew defender Julius James and Philadelphia Union midfielder Keon Daniel were unused subs.

Real Salt Lake midfielder Jean Alexandre got the full 90 in Haiti’s 2-1 win over Antigua and Barbuda, but like the Soca Warriors, Les Grenadiers are already eliminated.

El Salvador fared better, advancing with a 4-0 win over Suriname as Portland's Steve Purdy went 90 minutes.

Down in CONMEBOL, Chivas USA forward Alejandro Moreno was a spectator as Venezuela kept up their sterling form in World Cup qualifying, picking up a 1-0 home win over Bolivia.

Across the pond in African qualifying, Whitecaps midfielder Nizar Khalfan got 62 minutes for Tanzania in their 1-0 loss to Chad. The result was enough to see the Taifo Stars through to the group stage, as they advance on the away-goals rule after a 2-2 aggregate.

Meanwhile, in friendly action, Costa Rica came up just short of a miraculous win over World Cup and European champions Spain, conceding a David Villa equalizer two minutes into second-half stoppage time for the 2-2 draw. RBNY left back Roy Miller and Chivas USA defender Michael Umaña both went the distance for the Ticos.
