You Make The Call: Did Davis commit a hand ball?

Brad Davis - October 30, 2011

Did you think Houston's Brad Davis handled the ball in the box against the Union?

HOUSTON – It was an incident that didn't get much play on Sunday night in Philadelphia.

Early in the second half of the first leg Eastern Conference semifinal between the Houston Dynamo and Philadelphia Union at PPL Park, Philly's Sébastien Le Toux fired a shot toward goal from the left side of the box. Houston's Brad Davis made the awkward block inside his own penalty area, deflecting the effort with what some claim was his arm. The Dynamo held a 2-1 lead at that time.

However, Union manager Peter Nowak didn't bring up the controversy in the postgame press conference. And the Philadelphia players did not make mention of it in their reactions from the locker after the match.

But it has not slipped Le Toux's mind just yet. With an inconclusive television angle from the match broadcast, the Frenchman was probably in the best position to see Davis' intervening play.

"There is no question he put his hand up to stop it," Le Toux told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

On Wednesday afternoon after practice, Davis set the record straight when informed of Le Toux's position.

“Going back and looking at it, I didn’t just throw my hand out," Davis said. "It was a quick reaction and caught part of my chest as well. I think the ref made, in all honesty, the right call.

"That’s all I really have to add. It’s not like I dove out and drew my arm out and stopped a goal. He hit it, it hit part of my chest and it was a reaction thing.”
