TFC happy with CCL win, but their work's not finished yet

TORONTO  -- Toronto FC are still riding the high of Tuesday’s 3-0 win over FC Dallas that earned them a place in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

But with the season finale coming up on Saturday against the New England Revolution at BMO Field (12:30 pm ET; watch LIVE online), their work isn’t done just yet.

“I think the last game against New England is also an important game because we’ve got a good feeling and we want to finish the season well with a good result,” head coach and technical director Aron Winter said on Friday after training. “We have to try to do that.”

Added center back Andy Iro, “We’re happy. We want to go out on a good note on Saturday and then really build for the start of next season.”

The Revs have lost five games in a row, the past three at home including a 3-0 decision to the Columbus Crew last Saturday. New England haven’t won since Sept. 10 when they earned a 2-0 home decision over playoff-bound FC Dallas.

“It’s been a difficult season for them,” said Iro, who joined Toronto in a trade with Columbus in mid-July. “They got smacked last week and they don’t want to continue the bad run of form.

“Obviously for us we have to get pumped up again. It would be easy just to sit on our 3-0 win and just be happy with it but we know that’s going to be packed house [Saturday] and we know everyone is going to be looking for a good performance.”

Both Toronto and New England will miss the playoffs this season, but the Reds have been on a run of good form recently, going 4-2-4 in the past 10 games in all competitions.

“You can see it’s a different TFC in the past couple of months,” midfielder Julian de Guzman said. “It’s also important to end the season on a positive note by getting a result against New England as something to give back to the fans and kind of celebrate with them here and look forward to having an even bigger season next year.”
