Herculez Gómez

Gringo Report: Gómez scores but Estudiantes fall

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Herculez Gomez scored his fourth goal of the season for Estudiantes Tecos against Pumas UNAM on Saturday and started his first game since Aug. 13, but his relegation-threatened team lost 2-1 to the current Mexican champions.

Gomez connected with a long, driven pass with a header from near the penalty spot that nestled into the far corner and gave the goalkeeper no chance. That makes it two goals in two games for the former LA Galaxy striker.

Elsewhere in Mexico, DaMarcus Beasley played 90 minutes for Puebla, who continued their volatile form by losing 2-1 at home to Santos Laguna, just one week after ripping Chivas apart.

Miguel Ángel Ponce had a rough return to action after recovering from a severe blow to the head playing for Mexico’s Under-22s. The Sacramento-born left back was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the space of three minutes early in the second half, with Chivas winning 1-0 away at Cruz Azul. The home team came back to tie the game 1-1.

At the Estadio Azteca, neither Edgar Castillo nor Isaac Acuña were involved for Alfredo Tena’s first game as coach of Club América against Club Tijuana, although Castillo was recovering this week from a thigh strain.

Tijuana, with new coach Antonio Mohamed also debuting on the bench, tallied after 13 seconds but the score ended 1-1. Joe Corona came on in the 66th minute and played in a more central position, as he has previously told MLScoccer.com he prefers.

In the Liga de Ascenso, Marco Vidal was an unused sub for Club León in its 1-1 draw with Irapuato.

In the Under-20s league, center back Emilio Orozco got the only goal of the game for Tigres UANL against Jaguares.

Goalkeeper Diego Restrepo was on the bench for América de Cali against Junior in the Colombian top flight.
