AMSTERDAM — Oguchi Onyewu opened his Sporting CP account in style on Monday night, banging home the late winner for a 3-2 victory at Rio Ave in Portuguese Primeira Liga action.

The US defender drilled a corner-kick header into the back of the net with a quarter-hour remaining to decide a wild match.

The visitors were up two inside four minutes, but eventually leaked a pair of early second-half goals to set up Onyewu's heroics.

The Lions have now won three straight since inserting the American into the back line. Monday's result lifted Sporting four spots to sixth place.
