Another one bites the dust.
In what has amounted to a disastrous start for Mexican clubs in the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League, a fourth side from South of the Border, Santos Laguna, went down to defeat on Wednesday night and paid the price for fielding a reserve lineup. It follows losses by Pumas UNAM, Monarcas Morelia and Monterrey in the opening two matchdays of CCL play.
Group B: Isidro Metapán (ESV) 2, Santos Laguna (MEX) 0
Salvadoran side Isidro Metapán, who lost 3-2 to group leaders Colorado Rapids in their opener, scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 home win against Santos, who advanced to the semis in the last edition. The tallies were authored by Paulo Suárez, older brother of Liverpool FC’s Luis Suárez who also scored earlier Wednesday, and Christian Bautista.
The Rapids are forewarned ahead of their trip to El Salvador on Sept. 28 as Metapán now have a five-game unbeaten streak at home in CCL play and have dropped just one of their last 13 home games.
Group D: Comunicaciones (GUA) 2, Herediano (CRC) 0
Two late goals gave Guatemalan side Comunicaciones a 2-0 win against Costa Rica’s Herediano on Wednesday in a Group D match which was rescheduled from Tuesday night.
The goals were scored by Guatemalan Under-20 player Marvin Ceballos in the 73rd minute and in second-half stoppage time by Brayan Ordóñez.
The result left Herediano winless and goalless after two matches in Group D, which is led by the Seattle Sounders.
