Goat Notes: Rojiblancos fall to second-from-bottom in West

Sergio Arias

Chivas USA underwent a difficult week, failing to defeat the Houston Dynamo and dropping into a tie for second-from-bottom in the hotly-contested Western Conference.  However, the loss to the Dynamo was not the only news from the Rojiblancos' camp.

CHIVAS USA FRIENDLY WITH MEXICO COPA AMERICA SIDE OFF

It appears that Chivas USA fans are going to have to wait a little while longer for their side to announce any summer or fall friendly plans.

A team official with Chivas USA confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that a friendly, which had been announced by the Mexican Football Federation, would not take place. The match was scheduled to take place in Tijuana on June 15th between the Mexican U-23 side that will take place in the Copa America and Chivas USA.

News of the friendly was rumored first by ESPN Deportes following the Rojiblancos defeat to the LA Galaxy back in May. The last two years, Chivas USA have played Chivas de Guadalajara in a match dubbed the “ChivaClasico.”

ARIAS REMIANING ON LOAN WITH CHIVAS USA DESPITE MEXICAN DRAFT

Sergio Arias may not have earned playing time with Chivas USA this season, but the Mexican goalkeeper will remain at the club on season-long loan despite rumors that he may be returning to Mexico.

In the annual Mexican draft last week, Arias was selected by Mexican side Queretaro. In order for Arias to make his initial move to MLS, Guadalajara negotiated a deal with the Gallos Blancos (White Roosters), who had interest in the ‘keeper. A Chivas USA official confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that Arias was to remain with the club on season-long loan from Chivas de Guadalajara.

For a player that Co-Owner Antonio Cue labeled “the future of our franchise” at the team’s jersey unveiling back in March, Arias has struggled to find his way in MLS, buried deep on the team’s depth chart behind Dan Kennedy and Zach Thornton. The former Mexican U-17 goalkeeper, who helped lead Mexico to their title in 2005, has also found playing time difficult to come by in reserve matches where Zach Thornton has seen a considerable amount of time.
