COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — The long-awaited reunion between Colorado strikers Conor Casey and Omar Cummings will have to be put on ice again this weekend, as Cummings has made himself unavailable for the Rapids’ trip to Portland.
The Jamaican forward has been sidelined with an ankle injury since he limped off during Colorado’s match against the Houston Dynamo on May 4.
“I’m just not quite there,” Cummings told MLSsoccer.com on Thursday morning after training. “I know my body and it just doesn’t feel quite ready.”
Cummings, who combined with Casey last season to score 27 goals, took part in a full-sided game between a first team and a reserve group Thursday and appeared to be sprinting and turning well. He did, however, leave the game slightly early to nurse his ankle.
He had been hopeful for a 20-minute stretch off the bench this weekend but, with the reality of a game on turf and another flight, the home game next weekend against the LA Galaxy looks like a better prospect.
Cummings also said this morning that he may still be available for Jamaica should they make it through the group stages of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He was in contact Thursday morning with the Jamaican coaching staff to update them on his injury.
Jamaica return to action in the Gold Cup on Friday against Guatemala.
