TORONTO — Alan Gordon continues to work toward a return.
The Toronto FC forward, who has been out with a groin injury, trained with the team on Tuesday at Cherry Beach. But he couldn’t say if that means he will be able to play Saturday at BMO Field against last-place Sporting Kansas City.
“I don’t know, I can’t give it a percent,” he said. “I would say, 50-50.”
His return would be a rare bit of good news for Toronto FC, who are still smarting from a 6-2 home defeat to the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
“I think everybody who watched that game is frustrated, myself included and the guys on the field," Gordon said. "That’s a given.”
The club also lost defender Adrian Cann to a torn ACL on Tuesday, and will be without defender Dicoy Williams (Jamaica), winger Joao Plata (Ecuador) and midfielder Julian de Guzman (Canada), who are all away on international duty.
Gordon, who at 6-foot-3 offers size and a physical style up front, has scored two goals in the five league games after being acquired from Chivas USA in March. But the groin injury has hampered him much of the season.
The injury first occurred on April 9 in the 1-1 draw against the Earthquakes at San Jose, and he missed the next two games.
He scored the goal in a 1-0 victory in a Nutrilite Canadian Championship match against FC Edmonton at BMO Field on May 4, but left the game in the 65th minute with a recurrence of the injury. He has not played since.
“I’m just trying to stay positive and I keep having that long-term goal in mind,” he said, “getting on the field healthy and fit.”
When it comes, his return will provide TFC with a target man, a role that has been filled by Maicon Santos, who has five goals on the season.
“I don’t think that’s a problem,” Gordon said. “I think Maicon has been doing a good job, so I don’t necessarily think that’s the reason why we’ve been losing. But on a side note, I’m looking forward to getting healthy so we can have more bodies on the field.”
