Sueño MLS 2011 – presented by Allstate got off to a great start in Dallas last weekend, as six finalists were selected from the 400 original contestants. This weekend, the dreaming continues as another 400 young players will tryout in Chicago.
Find out which Dallas players reached the finals on Univision’s República Deportiva (Sunday, 11 am ET).
In the Windy City, Chicago Fire Director of Soccer and Team Development Paul Cadwell will oversee the tryouts, assisted by other staff coaches from the club’s academy. Also, Fire stars Marco Pappa and Gonzalo Segares will be on hand in the afternoon, acting as “celebrity scouts.”
The coaches will have a tough decision to make at the end of the weekend, when they choose the finalists who get to train with the Fire academy for a few days. Chicago Sueño player pool includes more than a few talents.
Gabriel Martinez, a 14-year-old forward from South Lyon, Michigan, says he “will do anything” to become a professional player. His father and grandfather played professionally in Mexico, but he has aspirations to follow in the footsteps of his current idol: Manchester United star Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez.
Jamil Carranza’s father was also a pro, which has provided inspiration for the 18-year-old from Phoenix, Arizona. When he was three, he would go watch his father play, and after contemplating being a boxer, the promising attacking midfielder finally succumbed to his love of soccer.
Fourteen-year-old forward Francisco Sanchez doesn’t have as far to go as others to get to the Fire: He lives just 10 blocks from Toyota Park. Although, Francisco is a fan of Chivas de Guadalajara, he goes to Fire games often with his family.
Finally, there are the Zavala brothers, Ángel and Alexis. A 15-year-old goalkeeper hoping to be named El Portero Allstate, Ángel has already received several accolades for his play in local leagues. He and his brother, a 14-year-old forward, often train together, with Alexis firing shots on Ángel.
These are just four of the 400-plus players who will compete this weekend.
Will they make it?
