NEW YORK — The last remnants of the previous coaching regimes at the New York Red Bulls are no longer with the club.
Assistant coach Richie Williams (above, at right) and goalkeeping coach Des McAleenan (left) were relieved of their duties on Monday afternoon.
“As an organization, we decided to go a different direction with our coaching staff,” Erik Solér, RBNY’s GM and sporting director, said in a statement released by the club. “We want to thank Richie and Des for their contributions to our franchise and wish them good luck in their future endeavors.”
Williams, who played eight seasons in MLS for D.C. United and the MetroStars, joined the Red Bulls staff as an assistant coach in 2006. During his five seasons with the club, he worked under Mo Johnston, Bruce Arena, Juan Carlos Osorio and current coach Hans Backe.
He also worked as caretaker head coach two separate times. In 2006, following the firing of Johnston, he spent six matches in charge, posting a 1-3-2 record. In 2009, he stepped in after Osorio’s sacking and posted a 3-3-2 record.
McAleenan, known by most as “Des,” originally joined the New York staff in 2002, and worked with the club’s goalkeepers, including Tim Howard, Jonny Walker, Tony Meola and current No. 1 Bouna Coundoul.
The club has not indicated who will replace Williams and McAleenan.
