American Exports: Edu's goal advances Rangers

Maurice Edu scored in Rangers' 4-0 victory on Saturday.

AMSTERDAM – Maurice Edu hit a dramatic equalizer in the 90th minute on Thursday to help Rangers draw with Sporting Lisbon 2-2 and advance on the away-goals rule to the Europa League round of 16.

The US midfielder etched his name in club history by sliding home a goalmouth feed near time to knot the aggregate at 3-3 and give the Light Blues the decisive away goal.

"We are involved in a lot of competitions and we want to go as far as we can in all of them," Edu told the BBC. "The performance we put on shows that and it defines what we are as a club. We showed a lot of resilience and desire to fight our way back into that game and get something out of it."

Rangers will begin their round of 16 tie at PSV Eindhoven on March 10.

"There will be no easy games," Edu told BBC. "We welcome the challenge. We know it's going to be an exciting draw and we are looking forward to it."

Elsewhere in Europa League action, Oguchi Onyewu returned to left back for 90 minutes as FC Twente fought off pesky visitors Rubin Kazan, rallying from two down for a 2-2 home draw to complete a 4-2 tie advancement.

The Tukkers move on to face a stiffer Russian challenge in defending champs Zenit St. Petersburg, with the home opener set for March 10.

Meanwhile, Sacha Kljestan got no further than warming up on the sideline as Anderlecht bowed out of the tourney with a 2-0 loss at Ajax, who cruised to the next round on a 5-0 aggregate.
