Red Bulls blow two-goal lead, fall to Guadalajara

The New York Red Bulls surrendered three goals in the final 19 minutes and squandered a 2-0 halftime lead to lose to Chivas de Guadalajara on Tuesday at the Estadio Omnilife.

Jorge Mora headed home a cross at close range in the waning seconds time as the Red Bulls, down to 10 men after Dane Richards’ late ejection, dropped the final friendly of their Mexican preseason trip.

The Red Bulls got off to a great start, with Richards acting as the main danger man for Hans Backe’s side. The Jamaican put New York on the board in the 29th minute after a Rafa Márquez delivered a beautiful long ball up the right side. Richards danced through Chivas’ defense and ripped one past Hugo Hernández for the 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, Richards turned provider as he swung in a cross into the box that teen sensation Juan Agudelo headed home to increase the advantage.

But the momentum swung back Guadalajara’s way as the game reached its conclusion. Striker Jesús Sánchez headed home an Alberto Medina cross past RBNY ‘keeper Greg Sutton in the 71st minute. Nine minutes later, substitute Antonio Gallardo evened things up after poking in a cross that looked to deflect off New York defender Carlos Mendes.

In the 85th minute it began to unravel for the Red Bulls as Richards was handed a second yellow card for a late challenge. With the man advantage, Chivas kept pressing their luck and found the game-winner as time expired.

On the plus side, Finnish trialist Teemu Tainio worked a solid half for RBNY’s back line, and newcomer Jan Gunnar Solli went the full 90 in the midfield.

The Red Bulls return to New York on Wednesday after wrapping their two-and-a-half-week Mexican training adventure with a 1-1-1 record following a 0-0 draw with Atlante and a win over Atlante’s U-20 side. The team then departs for the second phase of their preseason in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Feb. 21, and head to Phoenix on March 3.
