Chicago Fire technical director Frank Klopas said he expects Designated Player Nery Castillo to report to preseason camp, despite rumors linking the Mexican forward to a Greek club.
According to a Mexican report published Wednesday, Castillo wrote on his Facebook account that he and his brother Alex ā who serves as his agent ā are currently in Greece ānegotiating with a European club. Hopefully everything goes well and we can make the move.ā
Klopas ā who brought Castillo to Chicago last summer ā was asked about Castillo's comments in a conference call with reporters after Thursdayās SuperDraft.
āNery is a member of the Fire,ā Klopas said. āWe expect him to be back in preseason with the team. Thatās all I can tell you. My main focus has been on the draft.ā
Castillo signed a one-and-a-half year contract with the Fire last summer but can opt out of the deal in June. The mercurial striker, who played with Greek club Olympiacos from 2000-2007, failed to score or tally an assist in eight appearances with Chicago last year.
